The forest comprises the area of approximately 640,000 hectares, which is approximately 66 % of the land, of Aomori Prefecture. Aomori has rich forests with magnificent scenery such as Mt. Iwaki, Shirakami-Sanchi and the Shimokita Peninsula and there are various trekking and hiking courses that beginner can also try easily.

Juniko Trekking
Juniko is one of the famous sights among trekking course of the World Heritage, Shirakam-Sanchi. Mountain opens early for trekking season, and usually in the end of April to the begging of May, it is good season to walk and has various courses like Aoike to the beech tree woods, etc.

Hakkoda Walk
A walking tour “Hkkoda ‘Yuki-no-Kairo-to-Onsen (snow corridor and hot spring) Walks” will be held on March 30th and 31st yearly. It is a special event held on the day before opening of road between Sukayu and Yachi of Hakkoda-Towada Gold Line that is closed in each winter season. Participants can feel grand winter scenery of Hakkoda walking along 8 kilometers of white snow corridor that the highest snow wall becomes 9 meters.

With getting on the ropeway to the mountaintop park of Hakkoda, visitors can enjoy trekking from the top. It offers several courses such as an easy trail of 30 minutes walk or 4 hours route for mountaineer. Also snow trekking with snowshoes will give you another pleasure in winter.

“Shirakami Promenade” that is same environment with the area of the World Heritage Site offers you an experience walking with snowshoes through the beech tree forest in winter. You might meet winter leaf buds or wild rabbits and Japanese serows, and can satisfy silver world in Shirakami.
