Hirosaki Castle, a famous spot for cherry blossoms, is exceptional in the winter as well.
Hirosaki Castle Yuki-Doro Festival is one of five major snow festivals of Tohoku region since 1977. The snow lanterns featured in the festival are all hand-crafted by local citizens who wish to entertain others during the harsh winter. During the festival period, there are many events to enjoy the northern snow.
Snow and Illumination Fantasy
At the main exhibit area around Yon-maru, large snow structures based on historical architecture and a large slide entertain visitors from young to old. Every year, the Hirosaki post of the Ground Self-Defense Forces also takes part in the festival and exhibits their snow-creation. At night, the park illumination of the pine trees and the snow-covered Tenshukaku (the castle tower) creates a fascinating atmosphere. Around the Hasu Pond from the castle keep, visitors can enjoy the mini-kamakuras (igloos) lit with candles. There are also displays of projection mapping* on the large snow sculptures accompanied by music.
*Projection Mapping: Projection technology that uses irregular surface such as actual buildings and objects for video projection.
